Aged Parent visa (subclass 804)

Australia’s Aged Parent Visa permits permanent settlement in Australia by older parents who are already living in the country on a temporary visa, providing that their child is either:

  • a permanent of resident of Australia
  • a citizen of Australia
  • a citizen of New Zealand who has settled in Australia

Please note that the number of Aged Parent Visas which can be issued each year is capped, and there is a long wait for applications for this visa to be considered by authorities in Australia. At time of writing, applications are being considered which were lodged up to December 2012, meaning a current estimated waiting time of up to 11 years.

Aged parents may therefore wish to consider the Contributory Aged Parent visa as an alternative, as this has a lower waiting time of around five to six years. Please note that this visa carries with it a higher fee than the Aged Parent visa, and requires an Assurance of Support bond to be provided by the parent’s sponsor in Australia.
